Family Development

Healthy Families

Parenting Education & Support
Community Action provides services for the Healthy Families of Washington County program. Parenting is a skill, and this voluntary program provides long-term home visiting support that helps parents develop their skills to get off to a great start. Our trained staff work with expecting families or parents of newborns in their homes for the first three years of their child’s life.

Healthy Families helps pregnant women with:

  • Communicating with their chosen prenatal care provider
  • Preparing for childbirth and motherhood
  • Referrals to WIC and other needed services
  • Education and support with breastfeeding and infant nutrition

Parents learn about:

  • Child development
  • Positive guidance
  • Positive Discipline
  • Communication

This service is especially helpful for parents who want to develop the skills and knowledge to provide their children with the best possible parenting. Parents will learn how to create a nurturing environment for their children using positive parenting techniques. They are provided with the skills to build their own support network using information about community resources with an emphasis on health and well-being.
