WORKING WITH YOUR UTILITY COMPANIES

It is extremely important to communicate with your utility companies about your bill.  In general, utility companies do not want to disconnect your service and they will work with you to keep you connected.  See below for phone numbers and internet links.

Some important tips:

  • Make regular payments even if you cannot pay your entire balance.  Utility companies and assistance programs consider your payment history.  If you can show you are trying your best, you are more likely to avoid disconnection and get bill assistance.
  • Ask the utility for an extension.  They are usually willing to change your due date.
  • Make payment arrangements.  Utilities can arrange a payment plan to help you budget over time (sometimes called a Time Payment Agreement, or TPA).  In some cases, Community Action will require you to establish a payment agreement with your utility in order to qualify for assistance.
  • Sign up for bill discount programs.  PGE and Northwest Natural Gas offer discounted rates for low-income customers.  Please visit Community Action to sign up for other bill discount programs.
  • Enroll in PGE’s Medical Certificate Program.  Customers who rely on electricity for a medical need (such as oxygen or refrigerated insulin) can get more flexible billing and payment arrangements.
